Residential Lightning Protection System Mitigates Risk of Lightning Damage

A lightning protection system will intercept a lightning strike, provide a conductive path for the harmful electrical discharge to follow and disperse the energy safely into the ground. A lightning strike on your home can cause serious damage. However, if your home has a lightning protection system, a surge caused by lightning will often be safely deflected into the ground.

    Lightning Protection System Components

A lightning protection systems consists of:

Air terminals: These are copper or aluminum rods that are vertically fixed on the roof at regular intervals and are also known as lightning rods. The air terminals act as strike receptors, intercepting lightning strikes.

Main conductors: These braided cables, made of aluminum or copper, connect the air terminals to the other system components and the grounds.

Grounds: The structures should have at least two ground rods driven that are at a minimum of 10 feet into the earth. The ground terminations drive the harmful current into the earth, eliminating the possibility of injury or structural damage.

Bonding: Bonding connects metallic bodies (roof components) and grounded building systems to the main conductor in order to assure conductivity and prevent side flashing (flashing is lightning jumping between two objects).

Surge arresters and suppressors: An electrical surge is an increase in current caused by a lightning strike on or near a power line or utility service. Surge suppression is implemented at the electrical panel(s) to prevent over voltage from entering and causing a fire. Arresters fitted in electrical panels aid in the protection of large appliances and the prevention of fires at service panel entrances. Other in-house electronics may require additional safeguards. Surge protection devices are usually fitted alongside a lightning protection system.

Installing a lightning protection system is not a DIY job. You need a qualified professional who has knowledge of residential lightning protection, install lightning arrester for home, ground your house from lightning, etc. If a lightning protection system is not properly installed on your home it will not be effective.

    Lightning Rods

According to the National Weather Service

Lightning rods (and the accompanying protection system) are designed to protect a house or building from a direct lightning strike and, in particular, a lightning-initiated fire. Note that lightning protection systems do not prevent lightning from striking the structure, but rather intercept a lightning strike, provide a conductive path for the harmful electrical discharge to follow (the appropriate UL-listed copper or aluminum cable), and disperse the energy safely into the ground (grounding network). It’s very important that these components be properly connected (bonded) to minimize the chances for any sparks or side flashes.

While lightning rods help protect a structure from a direct lightning strike, a complete lightning protection system is needed to help prevent harmful electrical surges and possible fires caused by lightning entering a structure via wires and pipes. A complete system also includes electrical surge protection devices for incoming power, data, and communication lines; and surge protection devices for vulnerable appliances. Lightning protection may also be needed for gas piping.

Any lightning protection system should follow the national safety standards and requirements of the Lightning Protection Institute, National Fire Protection Association, and Underwriters Laboratories.” ~ Source National Weather Service
